Theta Waves
Theta waves are relatively large and slow brain waves (4Hz to 8Hz). Theta waves happen when many neurons fire synchronously in rhythm.
Theta waves occur during some states of sleep, and in states of quiet focus, such as meditation and hypnosis. Short memory tasks also produce Theta waves.
The hippocampus is thought to be the origin or control of Theta wave generation.
Theta waves are generated when a task is so familar or automatic that you can "detach" from it and think of other things, but still actively pursue the primary task. Some examples:
- Driving long periods
- Brushing your hair
- Shaving
- Meditation
